As so delightfully written in her recently published book about her odyssey, Angel On My Handlebars,A

Patricia Starr, at the age of  67 set out to bicycle across

America.

Her original inspiration to do so was born out of a desire to rise to the challenge and have a great time in doing so.  Some of her close friends and relatives questioned the wisdom or even sanity of such an endeavor, after all, she was not an experienced rider, and she planned to make the journey on an inexpensive bike that was designed for ordinary street use. What's more, she had never biked a long distance before, the longest being a one day, 60 mile trek near her home in Santa Barbara. And the 800 pound Gorilla in the room that no one wanted to mention was her age. Most of us wouldn't tackle such an arduous mission at any age, but she was 67!  Could she make it?  Would her health be at risk?  Were her eyes bigger than her hamstring muscles?

She would not be deterred.  Then some one suggested that as long as she was determined to try, why not publicize it and raise money for a music scholarship at the local community college in Santa Barbara? This would be perfect. For although Patricia was not a trained cyclist, she was indeed a trained classical pianist and also played trombone in the local 90 piece band, and music, after her family, was her life. Now she could have an exciting summer and give something back to the community by way of a perpetual music scholarship to fund deserving candidates with a scholarship grant.

Now that she had both a challenge and a purpose, there was no turning back.

She would be accompanied by her loving husband Gabriel who followed along in the family van providing moral support, encouragement, security and daily snacks for nourishment.
