Astoria Oregon Astoria is a city of 10,000 people on the Columbia River, just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. The city lines the south banks of the Columbia River, and the north banks of Young's bay. Surrounded by water and tall evergreen Douglass Fir, Hemlock and Spruce trees, Astoria is rich in scenic beauty, with a vista of the Pacific Ocean and its endless miles of sandy beaches viewed from a top of Astoria's historic Column (built in 1926, it is 125 feet high and has 164 steps winding to the top).

Comments From Patricia Hi--After the fabulous push-away party with the Baron, Andy, the "lunch Bunch" and assorted family and friends, we hit the road about 3:30 for points north--stopped at Arroyo Grande for dinner with Aunt Pat, Uncle Raul and Mikayla. Headed on after dinner to Pasa Robles for the night. Next morning took a quickie bike ride around town; stopped by the newspaper for an interview with their sports writer and headed north. Beautiful Lake Shasta was the stop for the evening and we stayed right by the lake. We were still floating from the 1-2-3-of Sunday's News press; John P. with Keyt3 news on Monday and the wonderful party of family and friends to send us off on Tuesday! Wednesday found us cruising on into Oregon: the "Love Machine" can only manage 45mpr on the steep climbs and Gabriel keeps wondering how I'm going to be able to do it--the awesome thing is that when we got to the top of most of them, they were in the 3500-4000 range and that is the same as Gibralter Road so I'm not going to worry about it!! Got as far as Canyonville(The 7 Feathers In dian Casino) so had a nice evening there--great show, dinner, and lost only a little cash!! Today a beautiful drive to Portland and we're staying very close to the Columbia River Gorge which we will enjoy tomorrow with all of it's magnificent waterfalls. Bye for now--thank you again to all of you for being in our lives and supporting us in whatever crazy endeavors we happen to be in at the moment! Love, Patricia and Gabriel P.S. We'll be calling the Baron at 12:55 p.m. on Sunday afternoon just before we meet the America By Bicycle group at !:00 p.m. Then we will know who we will be spending the next seven weeks with!! I'm sure all of the riders will be anticipating this meeting!!!!!!!!!!! |
