About Ontario Oregon

Ontario is located in Malheur County south of Baker City along Interstate 84, situated on the Idaho/Oregon border near Nyssa and Vale. The Ontario area, in an agricultural belt along the Snake River, has many reservoirs with good Fishing and Hunting and Shooting.

Ontario is the largest city in Malheur County, and is also in the area known as Oregon's Western Treasure Valley. This land has spacious, rugged areas, as well as prime agricultural growing land. Ontario grows onions, russet potatoes, sugar beets and peppermint. The people in this part of Oregon have diverse cultural backgrounds, such as Japanese, Basque, Mexican, American Indian and European. There are several festivals in the area, such as Ontario's Japanese Obon Festival, the Mexican Cinco De Mayo, and Thunderegg Days at Nyssa. Rock hounding is a favorite pastime, and you may even find Oregon's state rock, the thunderegg.

Comments from Patricia

This is a quickie--I was tired this morning.  Guess it's about time after the grueling day to John Day followed by 3800 feet of climbing yesterday during the 80 miles.

We had 80 miles today also but it was a gift.  We should have been resting today after six days of work but it didn't work that way except we had a lot of down hills today which was a well needed gift.

Day 7 E.JPG (34567 bytes)

As we were flying down one of the hills there was a complete roadblock and it was an 80 herd cattle block in addition to all the cowboys and their barking dogs.   So, one by one they were able to let us through and we went on our way.

Everyone was really happy to have a little relief this way so we were all in a good mood.  As we got into Ontario we found a motel with a piano so I had a chance to play for a few people tonight so that was fun..
