The people in this part of Oregon have diverse cultural backgrounds, such as Japanese, Basque, Mexican, American Indian and European. There are several festivals in the area, such as Ontario's Japanese Obon Festival, the Mexican Cinco De Mayo, and Thunderegg Days at Nyssa. Comments from Patricia This is a quickie--I was tired this morning. Guess it's about time after the grueling day to John Day followed by 3800 feet of climbing yesterday during the 80 miles. We had 80 miles today also but it was a gift. We should have been resting today after six days of work but it didn't work that way except we had a lot of down hills today which was a well needed gift. As we were flying down one of the hills there was a complete roadblock and it was an 80 herd cattle block in addition to all the cowboys and their barking dogs. So, one by one they were able to let us through and we went on our way. Everyone was really happy to have a little relief this way so we were all in a good mood. As we got into Ontario we found a motel with a piano so I had a chance to play for a few people tonight so that was fun..
