Comments from Gabriel

Hi, All..

Gabriel again, I beat Patricia mercilessly tonight (just kidding) to get her to log on to the daily diary but she continues to feign exhaustion.

Today was one of  the most grueling climbs since beginning. The elevation is 9,658 ft. ( the highest yet). About 45 miles of  slow upward climb and then the big one. This was the true test! This is the day we have talked about since day 1.

Well, after all the anticipation, Patricia tackled the "TOGWOTEE" Pass.  It's a 6 to 10 % incline and it was very slow and extremely difficult climb for her, but with shear guts & determination and relentless pedaling she finally hit the top, pedaling 100% of it. It was a day to celebrate!

She also crossed the "Continental Divide" today*. We were jumping for joy! It gets quite cold up on the pass as that is where the clouds set in and let go all that snow. We just had to pull over and throw a few snow balls. You know us folks from California, we do not get to see much of it!

We met some nice gentleman from the Dept. of Fish & Game who were towing what I first thought were giant BBQ pits, thinking that that's what they do out here with so much deer & wild life. The BBQ pit turned out to be a bear trap. Remember Yogi & Bo Bo?  They were always trying to get a little picnic basket.

Well, if they are caught the second time they will be put to bear heaven. Coming down the pass was such a treat. All that work going up resulted in miles and miles of free sailing on the downside.

The town of Dubois is a  nice a old fashioned  cowboy  town   where square dancing  is a hit with dads and moms with the kids, especially at the Rustic Pines Inn, a cool old western bar & dance hall. We had dinner there and it was great.

The views were unbelievable, especially from the top of the pass.

There are lots of interesting, what shall I call them, "business markers"? We saw moose heads and antlers and a variety of bizarre edifices. Apparently there are no sign ordinances out here.

Out for now,

Gabriel

* note from webmaster, when I said Patricia crossed the Continental Divide yeaterday I was mistaken. Sorry, I'm only just (mostly) human.
