67-Year-Old Woman Bicycles Across Country

By Darlene Deacon

Idaho Falls -

A 67-year-old woman is bicycling across the United States.. an idea that started as a simple dream and blossomed into a major charitable cause.

I was fortunate to speak with Patricia Starr as she made a brief stop in Idaho Falls.  She is an amazing woman taking on an incredible challenge.  Starting from Astoria, Oregon on the 20th of June, her destination is Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Patricia is not an experienced cyclist, but a professional concert pianist and she's full of determination.

She wanted this cross-country trip to fill more than just her dream and explains what happened.

"This was my dream and we just started working on it.  My husband, Gabriel, got busy on all the promotional part of it and it was like a big snowball that got started around us now because we had started a Patricia Starr Scholarship."

The Patricia Starr Scholarship has grown into an endowment fund making a one-thousand dollar grant every year to a performing arts student.

Patricia and her husband Gabriel spent the night at the Red Lion Inn across from the beautiful Idaho Falls.

Patricia may be only 67-years young, but because of her age and a bicycle trip of more than 35-hundred miles, she's also going for a Guinness World Record.  But how does her husband feel about all this?  He says:

"I couldn't be more proud of anybody in my whole life.  She is the most wonderful woman I've ever met."

I guess that says it all.

If you'd like to donate to the college fund or track Patricia's progress across country, visit her web site at www.sbstarrsview.com.

Patricia left Idaho Falls at the crack of dawn and headed into the Teton Mountains despite head winds and forecasted bad weather.  She expects the journey to take about 50 days.
