The colorful western town of Wall, South Dakota is located 55 miles east of Rapid City on Interstate 90. The Badlands National Park, just eight miles south of Wall is surrounded by the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands.

The Badlands area is a wonderland of water chiseled spires, ragged ridges, rugged canyons and prairie. The lower prairie lying along the flood plain of the White River is a sod-covered expanse dotted with scattered buttes. The upper prairie varies from great grassy flats to gentle grassy undulations. And there is "The Wall" standing between the two, serving as a barrier to north and south going traffic. "The Wall" is a rugged strip a half mile to three miles wide and nine miles long with a succession of tinted spires, ridges and twisted gullies. From "The Wall," the name of the town of Wall, South Dakota is derived. Wall was established as a railroad station on the C&NW Railroad in the summer of 1907.

Hi to all,

This had been a "quickie day" as compared to our other days.

I know Gabriel had fun writing about the big flies and tar problems yesterday but he didn't know we had pedaled 5,400 feet of altitude, so it was a gorgeous day but lots of climbing.

We were all  happy with a 57 miles day today.

The terrain was beautiful outside of Rapid City and lots of farm land with many rolling hills so we did a lot of climbing but not like yesterday.

The town of Wall is interesting--only 818 people live here but they have over 1,000 motel rooms although many are not open during the winter.

Someone sure had fed me a story a long time ago about the connection to Wal-Mart and found out today it was absolutely not true.

So, I stand corrected!

Must sign off--we have a lulu coming tomorrow so have to get up at 4:30.

117 miles with rain forecast and heat and headwinds to deal with so I am heading for bed at 8:45 tonight.

Love, Patricia
