Comments from Patricia

Hello Friends,

Everything started out nice today-- we have 72 miles to do today and the weather was nice.

About 45 to 50 miles out I caught up with Patricia, finding her within 7 miles. I can time her pretty good now depending on weather and elevation.

I just about know when she is getting really hungry and needs "refueling". We had lunch and off again she went. As I was at a stop junction a little out from Plankinton ,several people were interested in what we were doing out there.

Well, this wonderful woman stopped as she was a little lost. Her name is Amy Dee Christensen from Mitchell and her daughters Kristine & Sophie were asking me for directions. I told her it would be the blind leading the blind and that I only had a map and that we were from California.

She read the sign on the side of our van that says "67 year young Patricia Starr riding across America".  Then when Patricia came riding by her mouth hit the ground in disbelief that she was 67. I told her this woman is a really great role model for all, young and old.

Amy then cancelled what ever she was doing the rest of that day, called me and wanted to get together for dinner. We said of course and then she said she was bringing the Mayor of Mitchell and that she wanted to give Patricia the key to the city.

These women loved Patricia and love women with goal-- even the kids were excited too.

Kristine took her own personal interview from Patricia for a school project--she is 12 years old. It was a great dinner after the presentation of the key to the city. We met some really nice friends. here!  We will never forget their hospitality. The mayor is in her third term--she is 75 years old--very "down to earth and warm" and has accomplished so many things for Mitchell including getting $5 million in funds for water projects.

They are also building a new municipal pool and Alice (the mayor) said she wants to be the first one off the diving board--she is going to be dressed in 20-30's style with pantaloons etc.--she is a real kick !!

Patricia is starting to accept the fact that the wind seems to always be blowing here in Wyoming and S. Dakota--the head winds have been terrific and Patricia describes it as feeling like you are in a cage and have to keep pushing to get out.  Sometimes she has only 30 miles or so to get into the next city but every pedal is a fight--things a person never thinks of when you are in a car and putting the "pedal to the metal".

After our wonderful dinner we went to see the Corn Palace--what an awesome thing--Patricia had heard of it of course--being a Midwesterner-- but had never seen it--amazing how they can use corn cobs and husks to do all the art work..Bye for now--Love, GMG
